How to Comment on Articles

Commenting on articles is a great way to join the conversation with other readers without having to also join a bunch of forums or groups.

Who Can Comment

All Members (including free Observer tier) can comment on articles.

Commenting Requirements:

  • Must have a registered account
  • Must be logged in
  • Must have verified email address

Finding the Comments Section

Comments appear at the bottom of every article:

  1. Read the article
  2. Scroll to the author box at the end
  3. Find “Leave a Comment”
  4. Click on it to be jumped to the comments at the bottom of the page
  5. See existing comments and add your own

How to Leave a Comment

Step 1: Log In

  • Make sure you’re logged in to your account
  • Your name will appear at the top left

Step 2: Write Your Comment

  • Type your comment in the text field
  • Comments can be as short or long as you like

Step 3: Format (Optional) Basic formatting available:

  • Line breaks (press Enter)
  • Links (paste URL)
  • @mention other users (type @ + username)

Step 4: Review

  • Check for typos or formatting issues

Step 5: Submit

  • Click “Post Comment”
  • Your comment appears immediately

Your Comment Appears:

  • With your username
  • With your profile picture (if set)
  • With timestamp

Comment Best Practices

Be Thoughtful:

  • Add to the conversation
  • Share insights or perspectives
  • Ask genuine questions
  • Relate to the article content

Be Respectful:

  • Disagree with ideas, not people
  • Stay on topic
  • No personal attacks
  • Follow community guidelines

Be Constructive:

  • If you disagree, explain why
  • Offer alternative viewpoints
  • Back up claims with evidence
  • Engage in good faith

Good Comment Examples:

This analysis of how the show handles power dynamics really clicked for me. I hadn't noticed how often they use visual metaphors with height/positioning to reinforce who has power in each scene. Thanks for pointing that out!

Replying to Other Comments

To Reply:

  1. Find the comment you want to respond to
  2. Click “Reply” beneath that comment
  3. Write your response
  4. Click “Post Reply”

Your reply will:

  • Appear indented under the original comment
  • Notify the original commenter
  • Show threaded conversation structure

Threading:

  • Comments support multiple levels of replies
  • Keeps related discussions together
  • Easier to follow conversation threads

Engaging with Comments

Beyond writing your own comments:

Like Comments:

  • Click the heart/like icon on insightful comments
  • Shows appreciation
  • No negative voting (keeps discourse positive)

@Mention Users:

  • Type @ followed by username
  • Mentioned user receives notification
  • Brings them into conversation
  • Example: “Great point, @username”

Editing Your Comments

Made a typo or want to add something?

To Edit:

  1. Find your comment
  2. Click three dots (⋯) or “Edit”
  3. Make changes
  4. Click “Update Comment”

Rules:

  • Can edit anytime
  • Comment shows “edited” timestamp
  • Original post time remains
  • Can’t edit if comment has been removed by moderator

Deleting Your Comments

Changed your mind?

To Delete:

  1. Find your comment
  2. Click three dots (⋯)
  3. Select “Delete”
  4. Confirm deletion

Notes:

  • Can delete anytime
  • Permanently removed
  • Cannot be recovered

Comment Notifications

You’ll be notified when:

  • Someone replies to your comment
  • Someone @mentions you
  • Author responds to your comment

Manage Comment Notifications:

  • Account Settings > Notifications
  • Adjust accordingly

Commenting Etiquette

Do:

  • Read the full article before commenting
  • Read existing comments to avoid repetition
  • Stay on topic
  • Cite sources when making factual claims
  • Admit when you’re wrong
  • Thank others for good insights

Don’t:

  • Comment without reading the article
  • Personally attack other commenters
  • Spam or self-promote
  • Share personal information (yours or others’)
  • Deliberately derail conversations

Moderator Actions

Moderators may:

  • Remove comments that violate guidelines
  • Ban users who repeatedly violate rules
  • Close comments on articles if discussions become toxic

If your comment is removed:

  • You’ll receive notification explaining why
  • Repeated violations may result in account restrictions
  • You can appeal at [email protected]

Comment Visibility

All comments are visible to:

  • Anyone who can access the article
  • For paywalled content, only members with appropriate tier can see comments

Troubleshooting

Can’t Post Comments?

  • Verify you’re logged in
  • Check that email is verified
  • Clear browser cache
  • Try different browser
  • Contact [email protected]

Comment Not Appearing?

  • May be caught in spam filter
  • Check for guideline violations
  • Contact moderators if you believe it’s an error
