Cookie Policies

What are cookies?

Cookies are small pieces of data, stored in text files, that are stored on your computer or other device when websites are loaded in a browser. They are widely used to “remember” you and your preferences, either for a single visit (through a “session cookie”) or for multiple repeat visits (using a “persistent cookie”). They ensure a consistent and efficient experience for visitors, and perform essential functions such as allowing users to register and remain logged in.

Cookies may be set by the site that you are visiting (known as “first party cookies”), or by third parties, such as those who serve content or provide advertising or analytics services on the website (“third party cookies”).

How do we use cookies?

We use cookies for several purposes. Some cookies are necessary for technical reasons; some enable a personalized experience for visitors and registered users; some are for anonymous analytics; and some allow the display of content from selected third party networks. Some of these cookies may be set when a page is loaded, or when a visitor takes a particular action (toggling dark mode on, for example).

What type of cookies do we use?

We take privacy very seriously and have chosen to heavily limit the amount of third-party cookies we use.

If you visit our channel page, it is hosted through Open.Video, an Ezoic product that allows us to provide a YouTube-like channel on our own domain. The cookies on there are controlled by Ezoic, and we do not have any way to amend them. Please refer to Ezoic’s Cookies page for their policy.

Our website uses the following cookies:

Necessary & Functional Cookies

These cookies are essential for our website and services to perform basic functions and are necessary for us to operate certain features. This includes those required to allow registered users to authenticate and perform account-related functions, store preferences set by users such as account name, language, and location, and ensure our services are operating properly.

Preferences Cookies

These cookies enable the website to provide enhanced functionality and personalization beyond our core features.

Analytics Cookies

The website uses this type of cookie to collect information about your visits to our website. Such as:

  • Which pages did you visit?
  • What content did you view?
  • Which links did you click?

And other information about your browser, IP address (this is anonymized and only for security purposes such as if we need to ban an IP for abuse), device, and location. These analytics are used for our own marketing and advertising purposes, but they do not get sold to other companies under any circumstances.

For our marketing analytics, we use a self-hosted service, Matomo, that allows us to collect information to improve our site and know what users like safely and anonymously. All data remains secured, anonymized in our servers, and is deleted every 180 days.

While we as a U.S-based cooperative are generally required by law to comply with legitimate subpoenas, court orders, or warrants for user data, we vow to challenge these requests in court whenever possible to protect user privacy. We will refuse requests that are not backed by necessary legal authority, such as administrative requests that lack a judicial warrant, fishing expeditions, and any specific legal exemptions we can find for each request. Read more about our commitment to user privacy on our Privacy Policy page.
