Who We Are

The Convergence Lens is a worker-owned, reader-supported independent media publication covering the intersection of culture, politics, and social justice. We are not backed by corporations, venture capitalists, or institutional money. We answer to our members – both the workers who produce this publication and the readers who own it alongside us.

We believe that independent media has to be democratically owned to be truly independent, and that’s exactly what we are.

Our Values

We believe in authenticity, transparency, and the power of informed dialogue. We also believe in individual responsibility for platform owners. Any partnerships of any kind will be heavily vetted, and we will seek out partnerships that uplift minority-owned businesses first and foremost. We will not platform racists, homophobes, transphobes, zionists, or bigots of any kind, in any way. End of story.

Every decision we make – editorial, financial, and organizational – is guided by these commitments:

•  Complete editorial independence from all corporate and political interests.

•  Democratic ownership and governance, shared between workers and readers.

•  Centering marginalized voices, communities, and movements.

•  Full transparency with our community about how we operate and spend.

•  Accountability without purity politics – we want to encourage growth.

•  Fostering media literacy and open access to information as a tool of liberation.

Our Mission and Vision

The Convergence Lens exists to create democratic, community-owned media that centers marginalized voices – bridging pop culture with political reality, producing cultural analysis and investigative journalism that is accessible to working-class people, and building community ownership of the stories that shape our world. Our mission is to foster a platform where diverse voices can come together, building community and igniting people’s drive for change.

Our vision is a media landscape where working-class people and marginalized communities are the owners of journalism as opposed to corporations and governmental institutions. The Convergence Lens is our attempt to build the structures for that, piece by piece, story by story, member by member.

Editorial Policies

We are committed to independent, accurate, values-driven journalism and cultural commentary. Our editorial standards are published in full on our Editorial Policies page.

About Our Cooperative

The Convergence Lens is organized as a multi-stakeholder worker-consumer cooperative LLC – which is a fancy way of saying that the people who work here and the people who read our work are the owners of this publication.

We chose this structure because we believe what we say: that working-class people should have real ownership over the media that serves them. A cooperative is a legal and financial commitment to democratic ownership, shared governance, and the fair distribution of any surplus we generate.

Worker-Members

The journalists, editors, researchers, and staff who do the work of The Convergence Lens are Worker-Members of the cooperative. Worker-Members own an equal stake in the publication, have an equal vote in governance decisions, and share in any financial surplus the cooperative generates.

Reader-Members

Any subscriber can become a Reader-Member of the cooperative by paying a $45/year ownership fee in addition to their subscription. Reader-Members are co-owners of The Convergence Lens. They elect representatives to our Board of Directors, vote on governance decisions affecting the cooperative’s structure, and receive a share of any surplus we generate.

We set the Reader-Member ownership fee at $45/year – less than four dollars a month – because we mean it when we say that working-class people should be able to own their media.

What We Are Not

We are not a nonprofit. We are not sponsored by foundations, corporations, or political organizations. We are not backed by investors who expect a return. We are a cooperative: owned by the people who work here and the readers who believe in what we’re doing.
